Russia’s Treatment of WNBA Star Tells US Everything We Need to Know About Russia-US Relations

Too many Democrats in the US believe that Joe Biden has the potential to sway Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to end the war with Ukraine. The reality is that Putin has been threatening to use nuclear weapons for a while now, and he’s made it clear that he doesn’t want to hear from the US.

Members of the Squad have even gone as far as requesting Biden reach out to Putin to help negotiate the end of the war. We’ve got enough money in the game with the billions sent to Ukraine, so why not?

US-Russia relations are not in a good place, that’s why.

Biden is considered weak. And Putin may actually be criminally insane. The two cannot see eye to eye on anything, let alone the way that the world should proceed with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

As if we needed another reminder of how poor the relations are, we can look at how Russia is treating WNBA star, Brittney Griner. It’s as if the Communist nation is taking all of its aggression against the US out on her.

She was arrested in February under charges of possessing vape cartridges with cannabis oil. She certainly knew better than to carry it into the country, but she was arrested for possession and sentenced to nine years.

In the past, Russia likely would have released her as a “favor” to the US. Such favors are no longer available because of the tension between the two countries.
An appeal had been made for Griner’s case – and many hoped that she would finally be released.

Nope. Instead, the Russian court has gone as far as not only rejecting the appeal but also sending her to a penal colony where she’ll serve the rest of her sentence.

It only took the judge 30 minutes to uphold the verdict. And Elizabeth Roof, the US Charge d’Affaires in Moscow, called the sentence “excessive and disproportionate.”

Griner was given an opportunity to speak from the detention center where she was being held just outside of Moscow. She begged for mercy saying that it was an honest mistake. She also pointed out that she was barely over the allowed amount and that “People with more severe crimes have gotten less than what I was given.”
The problem is that Griner is a celebrity of sorts. Sure, she was a WNBA star. But now, she is a social justice warrior. Everyone knows her name now because there have been so many groups in the US involved in her case and desperate to bring her home.

Russia is using Griner as leverage. They won’t release her until they get what they want – such as having tariffs lifted.

The Biden administration isn’t about to do that for the release of one person – and so Russia is treating her in the worst possible way. National security advisor Jake Sullivan commented, “The president has demonstrated that he is willing to go to extraordinary lengths and make tough decisions to bring Americans home, as his administration has done successfully from countries around the world.”

Biden is weak, however, so the negotiations have repeatedly failed.

If anyone thinks that the relations between the US and Russia are good right now, we simply need to look at how Russia has denied the appeal for Brittney Griner.

It’s hard not to wonder, though – if Trump were still the president, would Griner already be home?
